Hudson Tomb, Halifax (1819)

Abbreviated in Vital Records of East Bridgewater as G.R.2.

Street map

Location:   Northeast corner of the intersection of Pond St. and Hudson St., just east of the East Bridgewater town line.

Directions:   From Rt. 106 in eastern East Bridgewater turn north onto Washington St. near a small restaurant, "Pub 106."   Travel about ½ mile to a small store, "Country Convenience," and take Pond St. to the right.   Follow about ¾ mile to Hudson St. on the left.   The tomb was located on the far left side corner.

Note:   This tomb has fallen into a state of disrepair.   Arthur Richardson reported that around 1980 the tomb could still be seen.   The front was open and accessible.   A fallen square granite lintel stone lay in front, face down, with the Hudson name engraved on it.   Arthur also reported that by about 2000 only a small mound was visible.

Location:   South side of Union St., just west of the East Bridgewater town line.

Directions:   From Rt. 24 take Rt. 106 east through West Bridgewater center.   At 2nd set of lights stay in left lane.   After crossing Rt. 28 stay on Rt. 106.   Travel approximately ¾ mile to a set of blinking yellow lights and take a left onto East St.   Go about 4 tenths of a mile and at the farm take a right onto West Union St.   Note: The graveyard is surrounded by a fence on the right hand side about 300 yards up the road but is located a distance into the field and is hard to see.   Unfortunately there are many new houses along that side so you should seek permission to cross their property.

From Rt. 18 coming from the north:   Approximately 6 tenths of a mile from the East Bridgewater / Whitman town line turn right at traffic lights onto Highland St.   Follow to the end turning left onto Elm St.   Follow to the end, being careful as there are two forks in the road.   At the first, 30 yards from the stop sign, bear left.   At the second fork, about ¼ mile ahead, bear right.   At the end of Elm St. turn right onto North Central St., follow North Central St. ¼ mile taking a slight left.   This is a dangerous intersection and you must yield the right of way to the traffic entering from your right!   Go about ½ mile and merge onto West Union St.   Go over the railroad bridge and the graveyard will be on the left about 100 yards.   See note in the paragraph above.

From Rt. 18 coming from the south:   At the traffic lights in the center of East Bridgewater take a slight left hand turn onto Central St.   Follow Central St. (which turns into North Central) to the bad intersection mentioned in the paragrah above and follow as in that paragraph.
