JOHN DAVIS9 (Zadoc = Julia Temple Davis) was b. at Buckfield, Me., Oct. 27, 1838. His genealogical history is as foll.: Zadoc8, b. at Middleboro', Mass., July 28, 1800, who lived at Buckfield, and d. at Winchendon, Mass., 3 Feb. 1873, was a s. of Thomas and Bathsheba (Churchill) Long. Thomas7, b. Aug. 1771, lived at Ply. and Middleboro', and d. at Buckfield, 1861, was a s. of Miles Long6, who came to Ply. from North Carolina, and m. in 1770 Thankful Clark. This is as far as the patetnal line has been traced. Thankful Clark6 b. 1750, was a dau. of Israel and Deborah (Pope) Clark of Ply. Israel5, b. 1720, was a s. of Josiah and Thankful (Tupper) Clark of Ply. Josiah4, b. 1690, was a s. of Thomas and Elizabeth (Crow) Clark of Ply. Thomas3, called "Silver-headed Thomas" because scalped by Indians when a boy, was a s. of James and Abigail Lothrop, the dau. of Rev. John Lothrop, who came over in the "Griffin," 1635, and was the fIrst minister at Barnstable. James2, b. at Ply. 1636, was a s. of Thomas Clark1, the pilgrim, who arrived at Ply. in the "Ann," 1623, and m. Susanna Ring.
On his mother's side John Davis Long is descended from Dolor Davis1, who was b. in Kent, Eng., ab. 1600; came to Boston, Mass., with Simon Willard, May, 1634; lived awhile at Cambridge; then, ab. 1640, at Dux.; and from thence removed, in 1643, to Barnstable, where he d. 1673, having lived at Concord from 1655 to 1666. Dolor m. ab. 1624, Margery Willard, b. 1602, dau. of Richard Willard of Horsemonden, Kent. She d. at Concord, Mass., between 1655 and 1666. Their s. Samuel2 m. at Lynn, Mass., Jan. 11, 1665, Mary Meads or Meadows, who d. at Concord, 1710. Their s. Simon3, kn. as "Lieut.," was b. 1683, m. 1713 Dorothy , who d. at Holden, 1776, and he d. at H. 1763. Their s. Simon4, b. 1714, a resident of Rutland, m. Hannah Gates of Stow. She d. 1761, and he d. 1754. Their s. David5 (Deacon), b. 1740, m. 1761, Abigail Brown, and lived at Paxton. Their s. Simon6, b. at Paxton, Sept. 2, 1765, resided at Paxton, West Boylston, and Falmouth, Me., and d. at Falmouth (now Deering), 17 March, 1810. He m. at Paxton Mrs. Persis Seaver, whose maiden name was Persis Temple, dau. of Jonas and Olive (Keyes) Temple. Their dau. Julia Temple Davis7, b. at Falmouth, Me., Feb. 17, 1807, m. at New Gloucester, Me., Aug. 31, 1824, Zadoc Long, and d. at Buckfield, Me., 19 Sept. 1869. Their s.
John Davis Long9, first above mentioned, was grad. at Har. Coll. 1857. "Attorney at law." LL.D. Har. Coll. 1880; came to reside in Hing. 1867; m. first, in Hing., Sept. 13, 1870, Mary Woodward Glover, dau. of George S. and Helen M. (Paul) Glover. She was b. at Roxbury, Mass., June 29, 1845, and d. at Boston, 16 Feb. 1882, æt. 37th yr. He m. secondly, May 22, 1886, Agnes, dau. of Rev. Joseph D. Peirce of North Attleboro'. She was b. at North Attleboro', Jan. 3, 1860.
Mr. Long represented the town of Hing. at the General Court in 1875, 1876, 1877, and 1878; was Speaker of the House of Represen-
