MAYHEW (MAHEW; MAYO).
1. JOHN B. (a descendant of Thomas Mahew, Governor and Patentee of Martha's Vineyard), was b. at Edgartown, Mass., 1790; settled in Hing. 1811, and m. Apr. 25, 1811, Deborah Hersey, dau. of Peter and Rachel (Stowell) Hersey. She was b. in Hing. Apr. 8, 1785, and d. 22 Sept. 1863, æt. 78 yrs. He d. 14 Apr. 1848, æt. 58 yrs. "Sail-maker." Resided on Hersey St. Their only

2. JOHN M. (John B. = Deborah Hersey), b. in Hing. Oct. 23, 1815. m. in 1837 Charlotte S. Hoyt, a native of New Hampshire, and dau. of Dr. Moses Hoyt. John M. d. while on a visit at Searsmont, Me., 30 March, 1886, æt. 70 yrs. "Sail-maker;" and for many yrs. of the firm of Marsh and Mayhew at the harbor. Resided on Cottage St., and later on Hersey St. In 1866 he removed with his fam. to Boston, and at the time of his decease was salesman in a boot and shoe house.

MAYO (MAHEW; MAYHEW).
JOHN, b. in Eng. ab. 1652, was in Hing. as early as 1680, when he was one of the tax-payers of the town, and contributed towards the erection of the new meeting-house. He m. Apr. 14, 1681, Hannah, dau. of Major John Freeman of Brewster, Mass., and remained here until ab. 1705, when he removed with his fam. to Brewster. He d. 1 Feb. 1725-26, æt. 74th yr. Resided while in Hing. on Main, near Water St. Was constable 1693; and one of the selectmen in 1704.
