| PELHAM,
Edward, of Hastings, in Sussex, England, a member of Parliament, 1597. He ws admitted at
Grays Inn, 1563, called to the bar 1579, knighted and made Lord Chief Baron of the
Exchequer of Ireland, and died 1606. His son, Herbert, of Michelham Priory, was admitted
to Grays Inn 1588, and his son, Herbert, bore his fathers arms in the Hastings
muster-roll 1619. The 2d Herbert, born in 1601, graduated at Oxford 1619, and came to
Massachusetts1638, preceded by a daughter, Penelope, in 1635, and a son. He had a 2d wife,
Elizabeth, wid. of Roger Harlakenden, and d. of Godfrey Basseville, by whom he had Mary,
1640; Frances, and probably Waldegrave; Edward, and Henry. He was the 1st Treasurer of
Harvard College, and returned to England 1649, where he died 1673. His wid. died 1706, and
was buried in Marshfield; Edward, m. either Godsgift or Freelove, d. of Gov. Bendict
Arnold of R.I., or both, and died in Newport 1720, leaving children Elizabeth, Edward, and
Thomas; Penelope, born 1619, m. Josiah Winslow, and the mention in his will of his aunt,
Elizabeth Pelham, suggests the inquiry whether Elizabeth, buried in Marshfield, was not a
sister of Herbert instead of his wife. The Pelham house in Hastings, built in 1611, was
standing in 1862, the oldest house in the town. - transcribed by Nancy Reece |
