Institutions with County-Wide Interests

Plymouth County Genealogists, Inc. is a society for those researching county families.   Each month except for July and August it publishes a newsletter and meets in East Bridgewater.

The National Society of Old Plymouth Colony Descendants is a hereditary society established in 1910.

The Old Colony Historical Society in Taunton has extensive resources for the three counties formed from Plymouth Colony - Plymouth, Bristol and Barnstable, including a library and archives, a museum, and special programs and services.

The South Shore Genealogical Society is for beginners, amateurs and professionals interested in genealogical research in Plymouth and Norfolk Counties.

The Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston collects and preserves rare and unique documents and artifacts, and has an extensive research library.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston is the nation's oldest genealogical society, established in 1845, and is the foremost society and library for New England research.   Its journal, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, is the nations oldest, published quarterly since 1847.

Mayflower Research

The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, established in 1897, has its offices and a library in Plymouth.   It is the parent society for those who can document descent from a Mayflower passenger.   Membership is through the state societies, including:

The Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, established in 1896, has its offices and a library in Braintree.

The Pilgrim Society operates a museum in Plymouth which holds an extensive collection of Pilgrim posessions and Native American artifacts.

Plimoth Plantation is a living history interpretation of 17th century life, including the 1627 Pilgrim Village, Hobbamock's (Wampanoag) Homesite and the Mayflower II.
