Plymouth County Vital Records
In the early years of New Plymouth Colony birth, marriage and death records were kept by the Secretaries of the colony. The original records are held by the Plymouth County Commissioners, with a transcription at the Massachusetts State Archives. Transcriptions of those early records have been published in three formats, as detailed below under Plymouth Colony in the Vital Records Published in Books and Magazines section of this page.
As towns were organized, each with its own Town Clerk, vital records originated in their offices and were in turn reported to the Colony Secretary. Ever since then they have been the responsibility of the municipal clerks. Duplicate records have been held by the state government since the middle of the nineteenth century, and vital records through about 1850 have been published for the majority of the towns and cities in the Commonwealth. The earliest records of births, marriages and deaths in Plymouth County precede the incorporation of the county. They were recorded by the Secretaries of New Plymouth Colony, and have been published in three formats.
A massive publication program during the first few decades of the twentieth century produced volumes of vital records through the year 1850 for the majority of Massachusetts towns and cities. They were undertaken with the assistance of the state government, and so are sometimes called the "official series." They were uniformly bound in a light brown fabric, and so are more often known as the "tan books." Plymouth County municipalities included in this series are:

Vital records volumes for some Plymouth County towns have been published outside of the official series. They are:
The towns of Lakeville, Marion, Mattapoisett, Norwell, Rockland and Whitman were established near or after the official series cutoff date of 1850 and so have no published volumes of vital records. Although Hingham is a seventeenth century town its vital records have not been published. The town's vital records were, however, used with full dates in compiling the genealogical volumes of the History of Hingham, and that work is a very useful substitute for an official series volume. Serialized literal transcriptions of the early vital records from a number of Plymouth County towns were published in Mayflower Descendant, including the first book of town records for Wareham. Lists of MD volume and page numbers are given below under the listings for those towns. The number of years covered by these series vary greatly from town to town, but because these are literal transcriptions they are often preferred by professional genealogists.
Those of you who live in Massachusetts will probably find most or all of the vital records volumes, as well as Mayflower Descendant, at your public library or in the library of a nearby city or town. Those who live in the other New England states may find them at a large library in your state, such as a state, large city or university library. Those outside of Massachusetts should refer to Susan Taylor's New England Genealogy Collections Outside of New England for a list of locations. You can find copies of books for sale by using the search engine at Bookfinder.com. Books that are no longer in copyright can often be found online at Internet Archive Text Archive, Family History Archives or Google Books. Additional books are available through two sites that many libraries offer access to - Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest Online. Most of these sources are available on CD-ROM, and a few are partially or fully available for free online, as noted under the listings for those towns.
