Articles about Scituate
Published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register
Introduction
A number of articles pertaining to Scituate have been published in the Register. Some of them are consolidated here for the benefit of Scituate reasearchers who may not have easy access to the Register.
In transcribed pages I have tried to render a faithful reproduction of the Register pages in HTML form, following the original format in the use of italics, superscript (ye) and double dating (170½). Portions of another article on a page have been omitted and the fact noted [in square brackets and in red], and the volume and page numbers have been added to the top of each page in the same format.
Scituate and Barnstable Church Records
Copied by Amos Otis
Reverend John Lothrop and his parishioners in England's first Congregational Church had been prosecuted and imprisoned by the King's officers. Lothrop was released on the condition that he be exiled from England. In 1634 he and thirty parishioners arrived in Boston, and removed immediately to Scituate where some of their number had already settled. Tensions arose between the congregation and Plymouth Colony authorities, so in 1639 the congregation removed to Mattakeese Plantation on Cape Cod, founding the town of Barnstable. These records extend from the founding of the Church of Christ in Scituate in 1634 up until June of 1702. Because of the sometimes unusual formatting of these pages I have chosen to present them as page images.

These gravestone abstracts from 1852 should be compared with the more recent transcriptions and abstracts linked to on the Cemeteries Page in order to show how a century and a half has affected the inscriptions.
